  24. 1. INTRODUCTION
  25.  
  26.    True Type Font Installer (TTInstal) was created to provide one major
  27.    feature that is lacking from the font installation feature of the
  28.    Microsoft Windows 3.1 Control Panel: mainly the ability to preview
  29.    fonts before they are installed.  Along the way, some other features
  30.    ended up in the program and more may be added as time goes by.

  33. 2. TTINSTAL FEATURES

  35.  - Previews TrueType fonts before they are installed
  36.  
  37.  - Supports network font installation

  39.  - Supports compressed TrueType font files (those that use Microsoft-standard
  40.    compression with the standard .TT_ file extension, such as used on the
  41.    Microsoft True Type Font Pack for Windows)

  45.  - Allows you to preview fonts in any desired size

  54. 3. INSTRUCTIONS

  56.  - Previewing Fonts
  57.  
  58.    Use the drive, directory and file list boxes to select a given TrueType
  59.    font.  Hit the Preview button to preview that font.
  60.    
  61.    Preview Indicators
  62.    
  63.       While a font is being previewed, the font name (e.g. "Helvetica Bold"
  64.       will appear in the Font Name box.  The font filename (e.g. "helvb.ttf")
  65.       is shown in the Filename box, and the actual preview of the font may
  66.       be seen in the Font Preview box.

  68.    Selecting Font Preview Size
  69.  
  70.       The desired font preview size in points may be selected via the Size
  71.       drop-down selector.

  73.    Special Preview Indicators
  74.  
  75.       In the blank space directly beneath the preview Size selector may appear
  76.       a font status indicator.  This indicator will read "Installed" if
  77.       TTINstal detects that the currently previewed font is installed.  It may
  78.       also read "Existing Metrics" if for some reason a scalable font metric
  79.       resource file (.FOT) happens to exist for the currently previewed font,
  80.       but the font is not currently installed in Windows (an unusual case).

  82.  - Installing Fonts

  84.    While a font is being previewed, pressing the Install button will
  85.    install that font into your Windows configuration.

  87.    Copy to Windows Directory Option   
  88.    
  89.       When you press the Install button, if the "Copy to Windows Directory"
  90.       option has been checked, TTInstal will also copy the font to your
  91.       Windows SYSTEM subdirectory.

  93.  - Removing Fonts

  95.    Pressing the Remove... button will give you the option of removing the
  96.    font from the WIN.INI and memory, deleting the scalable resource file
  97.    (.FOT) from disk, or deleting the TrueType font file (.TTF) file itself
  98.    from disk.  Naturally, caution should be exercised when deleting such
  99.    files.  TTInstal will ask you to confirm deletion of TrueType font files.

  101.  - Viewing Currently Installed Fonts

  103.    Press the Installed Fonts... button to produce a dialog box that will
  104.    allow you to view the currently installed fonts at any desired size.

  106.    Note that if you are currently previewing a font at the time you press
  107.    the Installed Fonts... button, that font will show up in the Installed 
  108.    Fonts dialog, since it is being displayed by TTInstal at the time.

  110.  - Printing Font Specimen Sheets
  111.  
  112.    While a font is being previewed, you can print a font specimen sheet
  113.    by pressing the Print button.  Specimen sheets show the font character
  114.    set from characters 32-255 in a 24-point size, and include character
  115.    codes underneath each character.

  119.    Press the Close button to shut down TTInstal.
